MOSQUEDA-LAZCARES, Gabriela et al. Time cutting and postharvest management of eight cut rose cultivars. Rev. Mex. Cienc. Agríc [online]. 2011, vol.2, n.spe3, pp.591-602. ISSN 2007-0934.
Traditional postharvest management of cut-flowers involves intermittent hydration of the post-harvest stems, but in recent years the practice has been questioned and, it has been suggested the dry handling system, which involves packing the stems without previous hydration; previous results show that this practice maintains the quality of the flowers stems same just as hydrated or even better. Considering this, the study dealt with two main objectives: 1) to evaluate the quality of eight cultivars of cut-rose (Freedom, Royalty, Red Alfa, Red Vicer, Grand Gala, Sena, Vendela and Pecubo), immediately hydrated after the harvest with Hydraflor® for 24 h, compared with dried stems, both treatments were stored at 4 °C and 90% relative humidity for 11 days, simulating commercial handling, 2) to evaluate the post-harvest behavior of eight cultivars of roses harvested in both seasons (May-September) handled and stored dry at 4 °C and 90% relative humidity for 11 days. The results from the first experiment showed that, the stems pretreated with Hydraflor®, presented a lower uptake of in-vase solution, vase life and increased incidence of Botrytis than the stems completely handled in dry after storage. The results from the second experiment showed that, the stems harvested in September presented up to 20% longer vase life than those harvested in May. The use of Crystal Clear® as a vase solution has a positive effect on increasing the fresh weight and vase life in all cultivars. The stems of the Vendela cultivar presented the longest vase life, in contrast with Pecubo.
