ESPARZA URZÚA, Gustavo Adolfo. Ernst Cassirer: A Biological Foundation for the Definition of Human Being as «symbolic animal». Rev. filos.open insight [online]. 2019, vol.10, n.18, pp.125-144. Epub 10-Nov-2023. ISSN 2395-8936. https://doi.org/10.23924/oi.v10n18a2019.pp125-144.289.
This paper analyses the biological foundation of a new definition of human nature, as proposed by Ernst Cassirer. Based on the state of the art, Cassirer’s Philosophy relies, for the most part, on the biological research in order to develop a definition of the human being’s symbolic nature. It will be shown that Cassirer’s analysis considers three key elements: 1) Uexküll theoretical biology; 2) aphasia and apraxia studies; 3) and a detailed philosophical consideration of both former and latter elements. The ensemble of all three elements offers a new perspective on the biological fundamentals in which the Neokatian philosopher supports his definition of human being a symbolic animal.
