FLORES-VELAZQUEZ, R. et al. BEHAVIOR TO THE MACHINING OF TWO OAK SPECIES. Rev. Chapingo ser. cienc. for. ambient [online]. 2007, vol.13, n.1, pp.41-46. ISSN 2007-4018.
Machining characteristics in the planing, boring, shaping, turning and sanding operations were evaluated in two oak species, Quercus affinis and Quercus laurina. Tests were made according with the standard ASTM-D 1666-87. Best results of planing for Q. affinis were obtained with a combination of 15° cutting angle and feed rates of 7.5 m·min-1. Influence of cutting angle was not observed in Q. laurina. Boring test, showed excellent results with the two speeds of reel turn tested. Shaping test, an excellent classification was obtained for both oak species. Turning test showed not influence of humidity content in Q. laurina, but in Q. affinis a classification of good was reached with smaller humidity content, and excellent for major humidity content. And sanding test all species were classified as excellent. According with tests results, the two oak species are appropriate to be utilized by lumber industry, and high quality products can be elaborated.
