The period marked by the brazilian political closure and the police repression of social movements has revealed many sections of the national Catholic Church as central actors in the political opposition and denunciation of the military regime and its acts of persecution. The purpose of this article is to examine the elements that were involved in the development of the social imaginary of Catholic Church in Brazil, a fact which contributed to the redefinition of its own religious worldview. Therefore, the discursive lexicon built by Catholic militants, the relationships network formed by bishops and priests of the most advanced dioceses in Brazil, the particular role assumed by the National Confederation of Brazilian Bishops (CNBB) and the terms in which the conflict for hegemony between Church and State during the Brazilian military dictatorship was produced, will be particularly examined on this analysis. Religion and Politics, in the new grammar of Catholic progressive sectors, would no longer mean opposite ideas but would be redefined as synonymous. The methodology combines the analysis of documentary sources, mainly those of Public Archives of the State of Rio de Janeiro (APERJ) and testimonies produced under oral history.
