Intersticios sociales [online]. 2016, n.11. ISSN 2007-4964.

The objective is to analyze the concept of governance, its origin and general characteristics, then discuss the general assumptions of environmental governance and the relevance of this concept in the articulation of protected natural areas conservation policies with urban ones. Environmental governance is a dynamic, participatory and decentralized decisions making process promoted by local agents to enhance the conservation of a protected natural area that favors the provision and maintenance of key environmental services for the welfare of the inhabitants of urban areas. This is a qualitative analysis of primary and secondary sources, through the case of Área Natural de Protección Hidrológica Municipal Bosque El Nixticuil-San Esteban-El Diente (Bensedi) located in Zapopan, Jalisco, Mexico. This case shows that the local society organizations are the main agent in the construction of polycentric environmental governance, whose fundamental challenge is to overcome socio-political contingencies.

Palabras llave : governance; nature conservancy; environmental policy; sustainable development; collective action; urban areas.
