The problem of the concentration of intraparty power is nothing new as it is a theme common to classic writings by Ostrogorski, Michels, Duverger and Panebianco, among others. However, studies of organizational life in Mexico have been characterized largely by purely conjunctural analyses that fail to reveal the trajectories and changes of the country's main political parties from their genesis to today: the Institutional Revolutionary Party (Partido Revolucionario Institucional, PRI), the National Action Party (Partido Acción Nacional, PAN), and the Democratic Revolutionary Party (Partido de la Revolución Democrática, PRD). This study attempts to fill this vacuum by providing evidence relevant to the longstanding discussion that commenced with Duverger and Panebianco. It posits that the origins of these parties conditioned future changes in their organization related to the concentration of power. Our main findings show that the genesis of these organizations is a fundamental aspect that must be taken into account when interpreting their development. Electoral results and internecine struggles are other factors that generate changes in the concentration of power, but more recently (2000-2015) these parties and their leaders have begun to share power more widely inside their organization -in contrast to earlier periods- in order to ensure their survival, though this has not brought any noticeable decrease in internal party control.
