PALACIOS RODRIGUEZ, Oscar Alejandro. Grounded Theory: Origin, Assumptions and Perspectives. Intersticios sociales [online]. 2021, n.22, pp.47-70. Epub 03-Nov-2021. ISSN 2007-4964.
Grounded theory (GT) has emerged recently as one of the qualitative methods most often utilized in scientific research. Since its appearance, distinct perspectives have been established regarding how to best develop research based on this method. The aim of the present study is to elucidate the origins of GT, its epistemological assumptions, and the way in which some current perspectives conceive it. This involved conducting a thorough theoretical review of the perspectives on GT that are considered most representative. GT is characterized as a systematic process for constructing theories based on data analysis. It is especially useful for dealing with problematics that are difficult to approach using quantitative perspectives due to their limitations. But it is necessary to understand the assumptions, limitations, and scope of GT in order to fully take advantage of its potential for conducting research that goes beyond the superficial level on topics of interest.
