This article aims to reconstruct three elements that allow us to circumscribe the materialist problematic shared by Nicos Poulantzas and Louis Althusser. These are: a) the question of the method of knowledge; b) the reconstruction of the Marxist social “topic”, and c) the logic of overdetermination. It posits the hypothesis that Poulantzas’ theory presents a specific modulation of each of these topics, despite the differences in their formulations or the use of other terms. It discusses the readings that suggest a radical rupture in Poulantzas’ theory regarding Althusser’s concepts, from a perspective that considers the thought operations that singularize their interventions, rather than the trajectories of these “authors”.
