Resumen

MAYA AMBIA, Carlos Javier. Mexican Fruit Citrus in Japan's Market: Experiences and Opportunities for Sinaloa. Méx.cuenca pac [online]. 2017, vol.6, n.16, pp.107-142. ISSN 2007-5308.

Sinaloa is currently a major producer and exporter of fresh fruits and vegetables in Mexico. However, to be competitive, Sinaloa farmers need to diversify both its markets, since most of their sales are directed to the us, as their products, since the bulk of their exports is limited to a narrow range of products. Hence, it is interesting to explore the possibilities for Sinaloa in the realm of citrus cultivation that could be successfully exported to Japan. Moreover, this could help to promote the double diversification aforementioned. Accordingly, this paper presents, firstly, an overview of world citrus market. Secondly, it is discussed Mexico's position in this market. Thirdly, citrus consumption is analyzed in Japan, contrasting domestic production with imports necessary to meet domestic demand. Besides, it is presented an evaluation of Mexican exports of these fruits to Japan, within the framework of the Economic Partnership Agreement signed between both countries. The paper concludes with some reflections on the possibilities currently offered to Sinaloa by the Japanese citrus market.
