VELAZQUEZ-TAMEZ, Laura Elizabeth. Educational dialogue with patients in traumatology and orthopedics. Horiz. sanitario [online]. 2022, vol.21, n.1, pp.51-62. Epub 26-Mayo-2023. ISSN 2007-7459. https://doi.org/10.19136/hs.a21n1.4047.
Objective:
Dialogue with patients is analyzed in this paper with an educational approach for them, as a possible element to reduce conflicts in the doctor-patient relationship and to improve therapeutic adherence. The research delves into the concept of educational dialogue with the patient and sought to identify teaching strategies and soft skills that the doctor requires to make it happen.
Materials and methods:
Qualitative research, first order sampling with analysis of in-depth interviews with specialists in traumatology and orthopedics, with subsequent instrumental case analysis in second order sampling in order to enrich the data collected, using non-participant observation, field notes and in-depth interview.
Results:
Four key actions were identified in the doctors' discourse to develop the educational dialogue with the patient, then the case study allowed to know the teaching strategies and skills of the doctor that are necessary to teach the patient to take care of their health, as well as the way in which this is received by the patient.
Conclusions:
The four-step model represented by the doctor's actions to develop educational dialogue with the patient could help to prevent conflicts in the doctor-patient relationship within a specialty with high lawsuit rates in Mexico. Patients values the time that the doctor gives them to explain and clarify their doubts. It is suggested to deepen on the teaching of these skills in medical training.
