ANDRADE-RUBIO, Karla Lorena. Victims of trafficking: migrant women, farm work and sexual harassment in Tamaulipas. CienciaUAT [online]. 2016, vol.11, n.1, pp.22-36. ISSN 2007-7858.
In the citrus-growing region of Tamaulipas, wich includes the municipalities of Llera, Hidalgo, Padilla, Güémez and Victoria, local manpower is insufficient during the harvest season, this is why migrant workers are informally hired, including women, occasionally. The objective of this work was to determine whether mi-grant women employed in the citrus-growing region of Tamaulipas worked under conditions of labor trafficking and sexual harassment. A qualitative methodology, based on in-depth inteviews to 20 migrant women (15 from Veracruz, Mexico, and 5 from Central America) was used. The results indicated that women were victims of labor trafficking and sexual harassment in the agricultural work, because the amount of work done is not proportional to the wages they receive, and their subordinate situation in the labor market makes them vulnerable to sexual harassment and violence. Labor trafficking was itertwined with sexual and gender violence.
