CAMACHO RODRIGUEZ, Karla Teresa. Consumerism and support networks in two gay collectives from Mexico City and Barcelona. Cultura representaciones soc [online]. 2019, vol.13, n.26, pp.300-336. ISSN 2007-8110. https://doi.org/10.28965/2019-26-11.
This text analyzes the role played by supporting networks for two gay collectives: one from Mexico City and the other from Barcelona. The research shows how perspectives relating to increasing access to more exclusive, targeted consumerism related to an assumed lifestyle, has given more presence and visibility to these groups in social and cultural contemporary life. This has led to practices and attribution of values that places this population within a symbolic incorporation process where gay is related to consumerism values. The discussion is related to results of research carried out on ethnographic identity and economical practices of members of these collectives; the conclusions show that consumerism is far from being a simple individualistic practice and highlights the importance of support networks between these groups.
