Competency-based education is the current standard in curricular planning in medicine. Competencies are integrated constructs of knowledge, skills and attitudes; however, they are difficult to measure and materialize since they constitute qualities of a person. Entrustable professional activities (EPAs) are key tasks of a discipline that constitute part of a physician’s work, require the integration of various competencies and are observable and measurable. The EPAs allow to take decisions about the level of supervision that a trainee requires to perform a specific task and therefore allow the materialization of competencies. The EPAs have implications for planning, curriculum implementation, and evaluation. In Mexico, there are still no EPA validation projects in gastroenterology and endoscopy. This is a narrative review of the literature on the use and implications of EPAs in gastroenterology and endoscopy.
