Resumen

ABUNDIS LUNA, Francisco  y  LEON ROBLES, Lorenzo. The Middle Class as a Political Identity in Mexico: Analysis of the 2021 Election. Rev. mex. opinión pública [online]. 2022, n.32, pp.33-55.  Epub 08-Abr-2022. ISSN 2448-4911.  https://doi.org/10.22201/fcpys.24484911e.2022.32.80697.

After the 2021 election in Mexico and the effective loss of votes by the president’s party, many political actors claimed that it was the middle class that changed its mind during the elections. This article explores the politization of social class identity as a major influence on electoral preferences and its possible effects in the polls. It uses data from exit polls conducted by Parametría on the day of the 2021 federal election and explored both the direct results and the influence of class identity when voting. Despite there being a relationship between a higher social class and the probability of voting for the opposition party, this effect is not significant and is practically null in the middle class. For the president’s party, the effect is negligible in the face of its advantage in the lower classes.

Palabras llave : Public opinion; elections; middle class; political identity.
