Throughout the history of humanity, the discovery and use of materials has been an engine for the advancement of societies that have managed to take advantage of them. However, they have also represented emerging risks for health and the degradation of the environment due to the properties of the materials. In the present article a brief recount of this history is made from the stone age to the present day, as well as the value that the use of different models of organisms and in particular the zebrafish in the evaluation of toxicity as one of the fundamental aspects of studying the effects of nanomaterials.
