Resumen
GOMEZ-AGUILAR, Iván Eliab. Psychiatric medical knowledge: questions from social epistemology. Inter disciplina [online]. 2021, vol.9, n.24, pp.173-200. Epub 25-Jun-2021. ISSN 2448-5705. https://doi.org/10.22201/ceiich.24485705e.2021.23.78463.
In this work, I set out the relevance of social epistemology to address experts' knowledge, focusing on the case of contemporary psychiatry. In section one, I discuss what social epistemology is and some commitments of this approach. In section two, I point out some issues to be tackled by social epistemology regarding the uses and generation of knowledge in psychiatry. First, I distinguish three social scenarios in the use and generation of psychiatric knowledge related to different social levels: interactions between people, social institutions, and production of hermeneutical resources. And then, I propose a characterization of the way in which social epistemology can help address in each level, respectively: a) testimonial epistemic injustice regarding the interaction between psychiatrists and patients; b) the production of diagnosis classification of mental disorders; and c) hermeneutical injustice regarding the way of describing the experiences commonly known as 'mental disorders' by psychiatry.
