Resumen

OLIVEIRA, Marília Rodrigues de. Sherlock Holmes in Brazil: Elysio de Carvalho and the Circulation of Policing Knowledge between Europe and South America in the Early 20th Century. Hist. mex. [online]. 2021, vol.70, n.3, pp.1327-1359.  Epub 19-Feb-2021. ISSN 2448-6531.  https://doi.org/10.24201/hm.v70i3.4185.

This article has the objective of analyzing the emergence of policing knowledge through the career of Elysio de Carvalho, the director of Rio de Janeiro’s Office of Identification and Statistics. This functionary studied so-called economic crimes, such as the counterfeiters that operated in Brazil’s capital city. By analyzing policing publications and the correspondence between criminologists, we can explain the circulation of knowledge between European and South American police officers regarding those crimes that threatened the private property of individuals, as well as the assets of banks and insurance companies, along with other capitalist institutions.
