Resumen

MENDEZ ZARATE, Armando. Property Dynamics in Chiapas: Co-Ownership in Comitán, 1885-1935. Hist. mex. [online]. 2022, vol.71, n.3, pp.1235-1270.  Epub 13-Dic-2021. ISSN 2448-6531.  https://doi.org/10.24201/hm.v71i3.4361.

In the local historiography, studies of property rights and land ownership patterns in 19th and 20th Century Chiapas have revealed the particularities of communal and private farmland. This article seeks to contribute to the debate on private property in Chiapas by analyzing co-ownership in Comitán. The objective is to analyze a form of joint ownership, but one that remained private, distinct from the communal land ownership patterns seen elsewhere. What was coownership in 19th and early 20th Century Chiapas and how did it operate? These questions allow us to sketch out one aspect of the agrarian history of Chiapas that is focused on private property, especially in terms of the area between what was then the administrative department of Comitán and northwestern Guatemala, where the border remained undefined for a large part of the 19th Century.
