CARDENAS GARCIA, Nicolás. Chinese immigrants in a land of revolutionaries: The Case of Sinaloa. Hist. mex. [online]. 2023, vol.73, n.1, pp.111-166. Epub 26-Jun-2023. ISSN 2448-6531. https://doi.org/10.24201/hm.v73i1.4667.
This article analyzes the experience of the Chinese immigrants who settled in Sinaloa during the early decades of the twentieth century. In spite of revolutionary violence, they achieved a certain economic success and integration into society through marriage, naturalization and the adoption of many elements of local culture. Nevertheless, a popular nationalism emerged during the Revolution that expressed itself through a rejection of foreigners, giving legitimacy to an anti-Chinese movement in the main cities of Sinaloa. Its leaders connected nationalism to a program of racial defense, confirming Knight’s thesis that the cult of the mestizo implied an inverted racism. This movement would quickly lay the institutional and symbolic basis for the expulsion of the Chinese from the state in later years.
