PEREZ ZAMARRIPA, Abisai. The rebellion of the faithful against the liberal state. Citizenship, political legitimacy and the catholic nation in the city of Puebla, 1821-1834. Let. hist. [online]. 2017, n.17, pp.71-95. ISSN 2448-8372.
This work analyzes how the Society of the city of Puebla defended the Catholic Church against the “first liberal reform of Valentín Gómez Farías -which occurred between 1833-1834-” through Pronunciamientos. The article first explains the complex relationship between the Church, the political authority and the society in Puebla in the attempt to understand how the project of the Catholic nation functioned in that city. Thus, the pronunciamientos were analyzed to explain the fact that society understood the notion of political legitimacy by taking into consideration the liberal discourse of legality but also in terms of their traditions and religious values. This work contributes to understand how the popular participation contributed in the breakdown of the “first liberal reform”.
