Resumen

LECHUGA RODRIGUEZ, Eduardo Luis. Child Poverty and its Effect on School Dropout (2002- 2018). Ens. Rev. econ. [online]. 2022, vol.41, n.1, pp.75-100.  Epub 28-Feb-2023. ISSN 2448-8402.  https://doi.org/10.29105/ensayos41.1-4.

Poverty has been the objective of innumerable studies; however, this article aims to know the effect of this phenomenon on school dropout, from a longitudinal perspective using survival models. Using the period between 2002 and 2018 to determine if education is an efficient tool to break intergenerational cycles of poverty. To build the first Mexican pseudo-panel, nine periods of the ENIGH were used.

The results show that Mexican students have an average probability of dropping out of school of 84 per cent from the time they are of age to start formal education until the age of eighteen, a figure that increases in rural areas, and the risk of dropping out varies according to age, gender and place of residence. It is worth mentioning that in some regions, poverty conditions are worsening, and more than three decades have passed without any improvement in this situation in Mexico. Public policies are needed to mitigate school dropout among the most vulnerable population, thus generating alternatives to reduce poverty.
