Resumen

ESPINOSA GUIA, Claudia Gisela. Social Organization and Male Dominance in Mathematics. Rev. latinoam. estud. educ. [online]. 2021, vol.51, n.3, pp.231-260.  Epub 20-Oct-2023. ISSN 2448-878X.  https://doi.org/10.48102/rlee.2021.51.3.394.

Research in the field of gender and mathematics considers the finding that mathematics is a male domain, a topic that this research takes as its main axis to describe its research issue. The interest was to identify the students of Mathematics at the Faculty of Sciences of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, considering their organization and the social relationships built to show how mathematics impacts, or not, student life in a space outside the classroom and inside the Faculty. For its analysis, we conducted indepth observations using ethnography as the main tool to describe in detail how complex the interactions in relationships can be in mathematics students, in a certain time, place, space, or with whom they relate. It was found that male domain in Mathematics is, between other things, having pleasure and knowledge in mathematics, showing that they know mathematics, discussing mathematics, and solving mathematical problems among peers. These aspects for the mathematics students were the key in the relationships they establish within the faculty, on the other hand, stereotypes and beliefs were not relevant issues among them.

Palabras llave : Gender; mathematics; male dominance; space.
