This article aims to analyze the documentary My Octopus Teacher (MOT) from the point of view of the viewer's engagement with the protagonist in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. A comprehensive definition of the concept of engagement is used, including variables related to the plot and to the receiver of the story. The content of the documentary is analyzed by applying the theoretical categories of the concept of character engagement. MOT can function as a story of empowerment for the viewer who has suffered from the loneliness and lack of sociability that the pandemic and its effects have produced.
