Background: Type 2 diabetes is a public health problem in Mexico. Between 10 to 34% of patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes present a grieving process due to the lack of health which influences adherence to treatment. Objective: To determine the association between the grieving process of lost in its different phases and the adherence to treatment in patients with type 2 diabetes. Method: Comparative cross-sectional study, including a total number of 134 patients (with and without adherence), chosen by non-probailistic sampling. Sociodemographic variables, phases of grief and therapeutic adherence were also studied. The EFD-66 scale for bereavement and the MBG questionnaire for therapeutic adherence were applied, using descriptive statistics and χ2 and odds ratio. Results: The average age in patients diagnosed with therapeutic adherence was 63.21 years (standard deviation: ± 11.75), 38.1% worked at home, 42.2% with primary schooling and 64.9% were married. The time of evolution of type 2 diabetes was 10 years and more in 61.2%. The results revealed statistical significance in association of therapeutic adherence in patients with denial, depression, anger and acceptance (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Association was demonstrated between treatment adherence and the phases of denial, anger, depression and acceptance.
