Resumen

MENDEZ-REYES, Jesús. Development, Mobility and Social Economy in Baja California: Transportation Cooperatives (1930-1960). Am. Lat. Hist. Econ [online]. 2018, vol.25, n.2, pp.210-238. ISSN 2007-3496.  https://doi.org/10.18232/alhe.v25i1.853.

Transportation is the support of economic development. The border towns of northern Mexico registered demographic and economic growth during the second third of the 20th century. The productive sectors were widened by the arrival of population, the return of Mexicans from the United States, as well as by the agrarian distribution, the Second World War and the bracero program. The article analyzes and describes the formation of transport cooperatives in Baja California between 1930 and 1960, links transport and passenger mobility to local development and explains how the economy, employment and cooperativism were adjusted. The documentary sources come from the General Archive of the Nation, are analyzed with the historical method and within the conceptual framework of social economics and economic history. It is concluded that the incorporation of co-operatives in the region, specifically those of carriers, solved the mobility of passengers, goods, household goods and mail, as well as provided jobs directly from social enterprises.

Palabras llave : social economics; cooperativism; transport; development.
