URRUTIA LIBARONA, Íñigo. El marco normativo de la Unión Europea sobre biotecnología. Bol. Mex. Der. Comp. [online]. 2008, vol.41, n.123, pp.1477-1530. ISSN 2448-4873.
EU legislation on GMOs has been in place since the early 1990s. This specific legislation has two main objectives: to protect health and the environment and to ensure the free movement of the genetically modified products in the European Union. The entire corpus of GMO legislation has recently been amended, leading to the creation of a new legal framework. This revised legislative framework is considered to be one of the strictest in the world. It provides for a single Community procedure for the new authorization of all food and feed derived from a GMO. However, in spite of the improvements in the regulatory framework, public and political concerns with GMOs continue. Whilst medical applications involving the use of GMOs have continued to make progress, this is not the case for the use of GMOs in agriculture, where so far there are no obvious perceived benefits for European consumers.
