This paper elaborates on the main difficulties of José Revueltas' aesthetic theory. Following the path of his communist militancy, it shows how Revueltas' aesthetic theories responded both to the national and international political struggle of the communist movement, and to the role that Revueltas thought should be played by writers, and artists in general, in that conflict. Concepts such as "aesthetic content of reality" and "intrinsic tendency of the novel" are developed and Revueltas' aesthetic and political criticisms of dogmatism and socialist realism are highlighted.
