HERREJON PEREDO, Carlos. Hidalgo's Indebtedness. Relac. Estud. hist. soc. [online]. 2013, vol.34, n.133, pp.199-223. ISSN 2448-7554.
This research represents a documented contribution to the life of Mexico's national hero, whos roles as a hacienda owner and entrepreneur are revealed in detail. At the same time, by situating itself in the watershed between the 18th and 19th centuries, it redimensions the agricultural crises of that time and the financial policies of the Spanish Crown. Hidalgo's finances are described as the means that allowed this prodigious and generous Creole to procure -for him-self and those closest tohim- certain of life's pleasures by sharing, loaning, and giving freely. Beyond this, the study reveals a world of relations that identifies the economic networks of the region's middle classes and clarifies the motives behind some of Hidalgo's personal decisions, such as his travels and changes of residence.
