VANEGAS DURAN, Claudia Marcela. The Language of Yucatan Attire in the Nineteenth Century. Relac. Estud. hist. soc. [online]. 2019, vol.40, n.160, pp.154-177. Epub 13-Nov-2020. ISSN 2448-7554. https://doi.org/10.24901/rehs.v40i160.608.
This article analyses the typical attire of Yucatan based on magazines and newspapers published there in the mid-19th century; sources that visualized social meanings, spaces, and practices linked to the uses of clothing, the commercial exchange involving garments, and the trades that made their materiality possible. The study focuses on literary narratives that describe the customs and “types” that defined what was considered “unique” to that region, and others that expressed approval or criticism of changes in clothing habits. A second topic is the iconography that was used to establish representations and projections of moral and aesthetic forms and values linked to processes of adaptation and cultural resistance, and the development of new parameters of consumption that characterized the study period.
