This essay includes a series of reflections on the film directed by Julie Taymor, Frida (2002) as historical cinema. It analyzes the representation of artist Frida Kahlo and her relationship with muralist Diego Rivera. It compares this movie with a previous biographical film directed by Paul Leduc, Frida, naturaleza muerta (1983) and with what is "really" said to have happened in history. It also examines the internal logic of the film as well as the most hackneyed representation of Mexico in US movies.
