BLANCO, Jessica. 1955 Coup in Cordoba (Argentina): the Intrinsic Limitations of the Local Peronist Structure in the Face of the Preventive Strengthening of the Church. Secuencia [online]. 2014, n.89, pp.141-161. ISSN 2395-8464.
The 1955 coup in Cordoba is usually explained from the perspective of the strength of the local church structure and the weakness of a Catholic Peronist party that imploded with the conflict between the Church and Perón. This paper seeks to clarify both conditions: It argues that the transformation of Cordoba Catholicism into an anti-Peronist political actor arose as a means of preventive resistance to the core expansion of national Peronism, since in Cordoba, the Peronist structure, including the local labor union, showed signs of being compatible with the universe of Catholic values. This situation, coupled with the interventionist dynamic applied from Buenos Aires to local Peronist apparatuses, prevented the formation of a stable, autonomous leadership which resulted in the inability to react and the half-heartedness of Mediterranean Peronism at decisive moments of the conflict.
