Resumen

GIL PEREZ, Anderson Paul  y  SANCHEZ PARRA, Sergio Arturo. Democracy or Dictatorship? Visions of the Cuban Revolution in Cadena García Valseca, 1959-1969. Secuencia [online]. 2022, n.112, e1880.  Epub 07-Mar-2022. ISSN 2395-8464.  https://doi.org/10.18234/secuencia.v0i112.1880.

The goal of the article is to analyze changes in the news coverage of the Cuban Revolution by the journalistic organization Cadena García Valseca. A review and qualitative interpretation of press sources and historiography shows that the Cuban Revolution was presented from two perspectives. One hailed the triumph of Fidel Castro, Camilo Cienfuegos, and Ernesto Guevara, over the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista as a victory for democracy in Latin America. The second dismissed the revolutionary process in Cuba as a communist dictatorship posing an “apparent” risk to the stability of the continent, particularly of Mexico. This contributes a new perspective from the Mexican press, providing greater nuances in a process that is always underway in the new Latin American political history.

Palabras llave : Cuban Revolution; Mexican press; cold war; communism; anti-communism.
