OLMOS-MARTINEZ, E y GONZALEZ-AVILA, ME. Sustainable local development strategies in a protected natural area of Baja California Sur. Universidad y ciencia [online]. 2011, vol.27, n.3, pp.281-298. ISSN 0186-2979.
This study addresses strategies for sustainable local development framed in a protected natural area. Silva's (2003) "Methodology for the preparation of local development strategies" (MEEDL), published by ILPES and CEPAL, was applied. The case study was conducted in the communities of San Jorge and San Dionisio (SJ-SD), located within the Biosphere Reserve Sierra la Laguna, in Baja California Sur, Mexico. The analysis was based on the method of observation, visits and fieldwork with the studied communities during 2006 and 2007, following a scheme of sustainable development and considering environmental, social and economic aspects. Results indicate that sustainable local development strategies based on the natural and socio-cultural vocations of the communities must be based on the following activities: semi-intensive livestock, ecotourism and orchards and, as an additional strategy, a social programme excelling in aspects of housing, health and education.
