MEJIA MOJICA, Humberto; PAREDES LIRA, Mara Erika y BELTRAN LOPEZ, Rosa Gabriela. First record and establishment of the Channel Catfish Ictalurus punctatus (Siluriformes: Ictaluridae) in a Tributary of the Balsas River, Mexico. Hidrobiológica [online]. 2013, vol.23, n.3, pp.456-459. ISSN 0188-8897.
We report the introduction of Ictalurus punctatus in a tributary of the Balsas river basin in Mexico's center, the channel catfish is added to the more than 15 species introduced into the hydrological region of Amacuzac river, in Morelos. The introduction and establishment of I. punctatus threatens native species of the Balsas basin, since it is a piscivore fish and, may pose a threat of hybridization with the native catfish of the Balsas basin, I. balsanus. The introduction of channel catfish, probably obeys to programs to sustain freshwater fisheries in the region. This event represents a serious risk to traditional fisheries with native species.
