ORONA CASTILLO, Ignacio et al. Technical and socioeconomic aspects of pecan nut production (Carya illinoensis Koch.) in the Comarca Lagunera region, Mexico. Agric. Téc. Méx [online]. 2006, vol.32, n.3, pp.295-301. ISSN 0568-2517.
The pecan crop at the Comarca Lagunera region of North-Central Mexico has been growing in area and productivity. The objective of this study, carried out during 2003, was to characterize the production systems of the pecan crop at the Comarca Lagunera region. A survey was designed and applied to randomly select communal and single landowner growers; it included technical and socioeconomic aspects. The sample method used was the random stratified and the sample size defined in correspondence with the size of the strata. The most important technical factors that limit pecan productions were a high incidence of plagues and diseases, as well as water scarcity; whereas for the socioeconomic factors were the abundance of middlemen and nut sale without added value. All problems were more accentuated among the communal producers. Main needs on the technical aspects include a training program on pest and diseases control and efficient irrigation practices. On the socioeconomic aspects, the organization of farmers is needed to sell directly to wholesalers and consumers and to negotiate financial credits for production and to add value.
