Resumen

SILVA STEFFENS, Nora; GAMONAL ARAVENA, Jorge  y  GAJARDO RAMIREZ, Marta. Occurrence of non fastidious Gram negative rods and yeasts in the subgingival microbiota of Chilean periodontitis patients. Rev. Odont. Mex [online]. 2006, vol.10, n.3, pp.119-125. ISSN 1870-199X.  https://doi.org/10.22201/fo.1870199xp.2006.10.3.15899.

Background and aim

Groups of defined bacteria in the subgingival microbiota have been associated with periodontitis. Therefore, periodontal therapy is directed toward the suppression or elimination of particular periodontal pathogens. Some patients are refractory or poorly responsive to periodontal therapy. Some authors have related them with the presence of unusual pathogens in the subgingival microbiota. Thus, the aim of this work was to study the prevalence of non fastidious Gram negative rods and yeasts in the subgingival microbiota of a group of Chilean aggressive and chronic periodontitis patients.

Material and methods

Subgingival plaque samples from of 75 periodontitis patients (chronic or aggressive) were obtained with paper points and deposited in cold RTF (4°C) to be analyzed immediately.

Results

22.6% of patients harbored non fastidious Gram negative rods, and yeasts a 9.3% of them. In the first group 64.8% of isolates was Alcaligenes faecalis, 17.6% Escherichia coli and the other 17.6% was Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Conclusions

No significant difference was observed between both groups of periodontitis patients (p > 0.05).
