ACEVES AVILA, Roberto. The continuity of baroque colonial devotions in XIX century Guadalajara (Zapopan and El Refugio). Tzintzun. Rev. estud. históricos [online]. 2018, n.68, pp.39-76. Epub 18-Mar-2020. ISSN 2007-963X.
The change and continuity of baroque colonial devotions during the Nineteenth century in Mexico, is exemplified with the Franciscan devotions to the Virgin of Zapopan and the Virgin of El Refugio in Guadalajara, capital city of the state of Jalisco, Mexico. The existence of an eschatological discourse, featured by the devil, and the use of devotions for promoting a political spirituality among the faithful, explain the continuity and strengthening of catholic devotions in an age characterized by laicity and anticlericalism.
