Resumen

LORENZO, María Dolores. Social assistance towards poverty in Mexico City. History of a discontinuous practice, 1930-1934. Tzintzun. Rev. estud. históricos [online]. 2018, n.68, pp.169-199.  Epub 18-Mar-2020. ISSN 2007-963X.

This paper shows how social intervention through state-led campaigns against begging articulated various purposes that resulted in divergent intention action against the poor that ranged from social assistance, strengthening of police intervention and targeting campaign towards specific groups of beggars. Our intention is to emphasize that the disputes and factional arrangements, that characterized post-revolution years, along economic crisis, outlined the directions that the state drew to contain the most visible effects of the pauperisation in the streets of Mexico City. Research for this article relied on the statistical Public Welfare records developed during the campaign against between 1930 and 1934.
