DIAZ-CELAYA, Marlene et al. Identification of Pythium species isolated from ornamental plants. Rev. Mex. Cienc. Agríc [online]. 2011, vol.2, n.spe3, pp.431-443. ISSN 2007-0934.
The use of ornamental plants as decoration in gardens and interiors has become worldwide quite important. However, one of the main problems in the production of these plants in the nursery is the inadequate phytosanitary handling, allowing diseases caused by Pythium spp. to affect all stages of production due that the pathogen can survive in water, plant residues and soil. With the rise of ornamental plants culture in nurseries and economic losses caused by plant pathogens, studies have been conducted in different nurseries around the world for detecting its presence; however, in Mexico there are only very few papers related to this matter. The aim of this study was to detect and identify Pythium species in samples of diseased tissues and soil's rhizosphere from nurseries located in Morelia, Tarimbaro and Uruapan in Michoacan State, by morphological and molecular characterization. The study was conducted in 2008 and 2009. Eighteen isolates were obtained from 17 hosts and 14 of them were pathogenic on cucumber. Thirteen isolates were characterized based on the sequences of the ITS region of rDNA and morphological characteristics; identified Pythium species were: one isolation with P. aphanidermatum, three of P. cylindrosporum, one with P. dissotocum, two of P. irregulare, three with P. splendens, two of P. ultimum var. ultimum and one with Pythium sp. nov.
