The purpose of this text is to analyze and exemplify the scientific validity of case studies in the social sciences. We clarify its various possibilities by clearly distinguishing the types of study that can be carried out and by providing clear examples in which this valuable methodological strategy has been used. First we define what a case study is by analyzing its limitations and possibilities (centered on the debates about the generalization of conclusions) in the research process. Finally we emphasize the need to draw on the pertinent complementarily within these methodological possibilities and the classic statistical strategies that, in articulation, can enrich the research work.
