This article reviews the evident marginalization process that literature teaching has undergone in the national educational system. It also analyzes the main focusing errors in literature studies, which has fostered in students the lack of interest on reading literary works. Some ways of understanding the teaching process are subjected to critical review and different approaches suggested as potential routes to achieve a humanistic education, which will contribute in the development of critical and sensitive citizens.
