MORAN FAUNDES, José Manuel. The Configuration of Neoconservative Civil Croups in Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru: A Characterization of Neoconservative Activism in the Andean Subregion. Rev. interdiscip. estud. género Col. Méx. [online]. 2023, vol.9, e967. Epub 28-Abr-2023. ISSN 2395-9185. https://doi.org/10.24201/reg.v9i1.967.
Church leaders have been the protagonists of the backlash against feminist and LGBTI demands in Latin America. However, various civil society groups have been created, complementing the churches’ actions. In many contexts, they have even managed to lead mobilizations against sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). This paper analyzes the main forms of organization, public identities, and types of collective action of neoconservative groups of civil society to oppose SRHR, in four countries that encompass the Andean subregion: Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. In each one, neoconservative groups from civil society were identified and characterized through an online tracking of organizations, revealing data related to their forms of presentation in the public sphere and their strategic actions. The information collected reveals the complexity of profiles, identities and typologies of neoconservative activism actions taken in the Andean subregion. The main findings pointed to a mixture of religious and secular organizations, the strong presence of groups of young people and parents, and the significant advocacy work these actors carry out both at a state level and within civil society.
