Abstract: A significant number of studies have found that the use of graphical representations can contribute to success in solving math problems. However, research results also suggest that the effective use of these representations depends on certain specific conditions. From this, it is established as a field of opportunity for research to learn more about these particular conditions. This research’s objective was to analyze the influence that the characteristics of the students’ graphic representations have on their performance when solving mathematical modelling problems. To carry out the investigation, we analyzed the drawings made by 63 seventh grade students from a school in Mexico when solving geometric modelling problems. In the study, we applied a set of analysis tools to classify graphic representations and their involvement in solution strategies and processes. The results showed evidence of a relevant relationship between the characteristics of the students’ drawings and the planning and execution of solving methods.
