The present article ponders the lack of attention anthropologists have paid to unpleasant matters. Existing explanations of this lacuna, it argues, are valid but insufficient. Based on ethnographic fieldwork with young neo-Nazis in Berlin, suggests the evasion of difficult issues in anthropology is the result of three interrelated forces: in the first place, the ethnic and academic norms which have dominated the discipline; second, its location in the economy of production of academic knowledge, to a great extent external to anthropology; and finally, contradictions and impasses in the field of ethnography.
