In this text the author presents an ethnographic approach to the Mazateca population of Huautla de Jiménez (Oaxaca), a place which has been characterized as a mystic tourist destination since the seventies. Here we may find many different expressions directed at enhancing and recreating the emblematical principles of the local culture, as well as satisfying the demands of visitors who seek to experiment with the sacred mushrooms of the community. The text shows a general panorama of this diversity with emphasis on the practices and proposals of certain actors interested in reactivating Mazateca ethnicity by means of recovering the historic memory and ancestral rituals and ceremonies.
