MARISCAL DE GANTE CENTENO, Carlos. Odio y amo. Catullus “Emotive Translation” of Bernardo Clariana (1954) since his Exile in New York. Nova tellus [online]. 2019, vol.37, n.2, pp.139-157. ISSN 0185-3058. https://doi.org/10.19130/iifl.nt.2019.37.2.821.
In this article we would like to present a study of Odio y amo, a translation of Catullus’ love poems, published by Bernardo Clariana, Spanish poet and Latin scholar exiled after the Spanish Civil War. We will approach Clariana’s life and his political and cultural environment. We will also analyze the translation itself, focusing on the new ideas shown on Catullus’ poetical work and on Carmen VIII as a paradigm of his model of translation. Finally, we will study carefully the illustrations, drawings by José Vela Zanetti, he himself an exiled.
