RANGEL SILVA, José Alfredo. Pames, Franciscans and Ranchers in Rioverde, Valles and Southern Nuevo Santander, 1600-1800. Relac. Estud. hist. soc. [online]. 2009, vol.30, n.120, pp.225-266. ISSN 2448-7554.
This study analyzes the relations among the indigenous Pames, ranchers and Franciscan missionaries in one of New Spain's frontier territories. The Franciscans converted the Pames into a labor force for nearby ranches and haciendas. In that process, ranchers and their foremen subjected those "neophytes" to all manner of abuse and disdain on lands that surrounded the Franciscan missions. Thus, the relations between ranchers and Indians were characterized by violence, with the Franciscans acting as intermediaries.
