ORTELLI, Sara. Subsistence Crises and Cattle-rustling in Northern New Spain: San José del Parral (1770-1790). Relac. Estud. hist. soc. [online]. 2010, vol.31, n.121, pp.21-56. ISSN 2448-7554.
This article examines the topic of cattle-rustling by Apaches, various other Indian bands and multiethnic groups in northern New Spain in the 18th century. It identifies the moments for which the available documentation makes it possible to demonstrate the intensification of this activity in the province of Nueva Vizcaya and then attempts to establish the relationships among increases in the number of robberies of cattle, productive cycles in the agricultural and mining sectors, subsistence crises, the incidence of drought, outbreaks of epidemics and crises of mortality. The analysis centers on the case of Real de San José del Parral and its jurisdiction during the two decades of 1770 and 1790.
