Resumen

ESPINOSA MARTINEZ, Edgar Iván. In Search of a Method: The Writing of History in Mexico, 1853-1889. Relac. Estud. hist. soc. [online]. 2010, vol.31, n.123, pp.21-58. ISSN 2448-7554.

This article details how, in the second half of the 19th century, a new form of appropriating and representing the past developed in Mexico. To this end, it describes the cultural and political milieu that reigned in the country during that period, emphasizing the tendencies and currents of thought (especially Romanticism and Scientism) that influenced the writing of history as proposed by the leading public figures of the time. This constituted the platform for a study of the past that was tinted with a national character (representing Mexicans), a liberal spirit (the State as guide) and scientific aspirations (a linear, document-based type of history).

Palabras llave : Enlightenment; Romanticism; Scientism; methodical school.
