This study examines forest exploitation in the Ario de Rosales district of Michoacán, Mexico, during the first four decades of the 20^th century at the hands of two North American businessmen: Santiago Slade and James J. Slade Jr. It is based on a case study of the Zatzio sawmill, located in a town that was built for its workers, and the way of life that the mill's employees and their families led.
